Brownie and Spotty were neighbour dogs who met every day to play together. Like pairs of dogs you can find in any 1 , these two dogs loved each other and played 2 so often that they had worn a path through the grass of the field between their own houses.
One evening, Brownie's family 3 that Brownie hadn't returned home. They went looking for him with no 4 . Brownie didn't appear the next day, and, despite their 5 to find him, by the next week he was still missing.
Curiously, Spotty 6 at Brownie's house alone, barking. Busy with their own lives, they just ignored (to pay no attention to) the 7 little neighbour dog.
Finally, one morning Spotty 8 to take "no" for an answer. Spotty followed Ted about, barking strongly, then running towards a nearby wood, as if to say, " 9 me! It's urgent!"
Ted followed the anxious Spotty. The little dog led the man to a 10 spot a half mile from the house. There Ted found his beloved Brownie alive, one of his hind legs stuck in a steel leg hold trap. Horrified, Ted now wished he'd taken Spotty's earlier requirement seriously. Then Ted noticed something quite remarkable.

At the University of Kansas art museum, scientists tested the effect of different colored walls on two groups of visitors to an exhibit of paintings. For the first group the room was painted white; for the second, dark brown. Movement of each group was followed by an electrical equipment under the carpet. The experiment showed that those who entered the dark brown walked more quickly, covered more area, and spent less time in the room than people in the white one. Dark brown made people more active, but the activity ended sooner. Not only the choice of colors but also the general appearance of a room affects those inside. Another experiment presented people with photographs of faces whose energy was to be commented. Three groups of people were used; each was shown the same photos, but each group was in an ordinary room-a nice office. The third was in a tastefully designed living room with carpeting. Results showed that the people in the beautiful room tend to give higher marks to the faces than those in the ugly room did. Other studies that students do better on tests taken in comfortable room than in ordinary-looking or ugly rooms.

I arrived in the classroom, ready to share my knowledge and experience with 75 students who would be my English Literature class. Having taught in the US for 17 years, I had no 1 about my ability to hold their attention and to 2 on them my admiration for the literature(文学)of my mother tongue.
I was shocked when the monitor shouted, "Stand up!" and the entire class rose as I entered the room, and I was somewhat 3 about how to get them to sit down again, but once that awkwardness(尴尬)was over, I quickly regained my calmness and began what I thought was a fact - packed lecture, sure to gain their respect - perhaps 4 their admiration. I went back to my office with the rosy glow which comes from a (n) sense of achievements.
My students kept diaries. However, as I read them, the rosy glow was gradually 5 by a strong sense of sadness. The first diary said, "Our literature teacher didn't teach us anything today. 6 her next lecture will be better." Greatly surprised, I read diary after diary, each expressing a similar subject. "Didn't I teach them anything? I described the entire philosophical framework(哲学体系)of Western thought and laid the historical 7 for all the works we'll study in class," I complained. "How can they say I didn't teach them anything?"
It was a long term, and it 8 became clear that my ideas about education were not the same as those of my students. I thought a teacher's job was to raise 9 questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. My students thought a teacher's job was to provide 10 information as directly and clearly as possible. What a difference!
However, I also learned a lot, and my experience with my Chinese students has made me a better American teacher, knowing how to teach in a different culture.
