31、The undersea world is very beautiful. Now more and more people want to dive in the water to find the secrets there. Scuba(戴水肺) diving is a new sport today. It can take you into a wonderful undersea world.
You will find many strange animals in the sea. Some are like a school bus. Many sea animals give out light in the dark and some have sharp teeth.
During the day, there is enough light. Here, under the sea, everything is blue and green. When fish swim nearby, you can catch them with your hands. When you have bottles of air on your back, you can stay in deep water for a long time. However, you can't dive too deep. And you must be very careful when you dive in deep water.
The deep sea is not an easy place to live in. It is cold, and it is dark, too. The deeper it is, the less sunlight there is. At about 3,000 feet, there is no light at all. It is very dark in the sea. Many fishes have no eyes. Some have big eyes. A few have eyes on one side.
Besides the coldness and the darkness, deep-sea animals face a third danger - other animals.
Animals eat! They must find food to eat. Many animals eat plants. However, some animals eat meat. This means these sea animals have two big jobs. They need to find animals as food, and they have to try not to become other animals' meal.

32、Once James Thornhill, a famous English painter, was asked to paint some pictures on the walls of the king's palace in England.
Then workers were sent for and a big platform(台子)was made.
With the help of a worker, Thornhill started painting on the platform. They worked for a whole year and at last the pictures were ready.
Thornhill was happy when he looked at the pictures, for they were really beautiful. He looked at them for a long time, and then took one step back and looked again. Now the pictures were even more beautiful. He took another step, then another. Finally he was at the very edge of the platform, but he didn't know it because he was thinking of his pictures.
The worker saw everything. "What should I do?" he thought. "Thornhill was at the very edge of the platform. If I cry out, he will take another step, fall off it and surely be killed. "So the worker quickly took some paint(漆)and threw it at the pictures.
"What are you doing?" cried the painter, running quickly forward to his pictures.

34、Although English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world every day. English speakers are always creating new words, and we are often able to know where most words come from.
Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham(火腿)? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburg. They did not speak good English, but they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what it was. The Germans did not understand the question and answered, "We come from Hamburg." One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of beef like those which the men from Hamburg ate. Then he put each between two pieces of bread and started selling them. Such bread came to be called "hamburgers". Today "hamburgers" are sold in many countries around the world.
Whether this story is true or not, it certainly is interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting, too. This reason, for most English words, can be found in any large English dictionary.

35、A million tourists go to Barcelona every year. They want to see Antonio Gaude's church. This unusual church has a strange history. Gaude was born in Spain in 1852. He had to work and study at the same time. He often missed classes because he had to work, but one day he designed a very unusual show-case for an exhibition in Paris. People began to give him work. He designed houses, offices and gardens. They were all very unusual. He was soon rich and famous. Then a rich bookseller said, "Will you build a church for the poor people of Barcelona? I will pay. I will build schools and workshops, too. They will help the people." "I will do it," said Gaudi. He worked for forty years, but he could not finish the church. It was too big. He needed $10,000,000. He gave all his money to the church. He was poor again when he died in 1926, and only the front of the church was finished. But architects, engineers and tourists from all over the world come to see it. It is very strange, very modern and very revolutionary.

36、A traveler came out of the airport. There were a lot of taxies. He asked every taxi-driver his name. Then he took the third one. It cost 5 dollars from the airport to the hotel. "How much does it cost for the whole day?" the man asked. "100 dollars," said the taxi-driver. This was very expensive, but the man said it was OK.
The taxi-driver took the man everywhere. He showed him all the parks and museums in the city. In the evening, they went back to the hotel. The traveler gave the taxi-driver 100 dollars and said, "What about tomorrow?" The taxi-driver looked at the man and said, "Tomorrow? It is another 100 dollars." But the man said, "That's OK! See you tomorrow." The taxi-driver was very pleased.
The next day, the taxi-driver took the traveler everywhere again. They visited all the parks and museums again. And in the evening, they went back to the hotel. The man gave the tax-driver 100 dollars again and said, "I'm going home tomorrow." The taxi-driver was very sorry because he liked the traveler and, above all, 100 dollars a day was a lot of money. "So you are going home. Where do you come from?" he asked. "I come from New York." "New York!" said the taxi-driver. "I have a sister in New York; her name is Susanna. Do you know her?"
"Of course I know her. She gave me 200 dollars for you!"

37、Winston Churchill was one of the great men of his age. To show their respect for him, the British lawmakers asked a fine artist, Graham Sutherland, to paint Winston Churchill's picture. When it was completed, it was presented to him, at a grand affair in the Westminster Hall, at the House of Commons (下议院).
It was reported in the newspapers to show that Churchill accepted the gift. He described the painting as "a remarkable example of modern art", which drew loud laughter.
In fact he was unhappy with the painting. Sutherland later reported that he asked whether it was to be painted in with a "happy" or "fierce" attitude. "Fierce," replied Churchill. At the time, Churchill was coming to the end of his political life and was unhappy that people wanted him to end his career.
Some twenty years later it was revealed that Lady Churchill hated the painting so much that she had it destroyed. "It was preying on (折磨) his mind," she was reported as saying.
A leading art critic was asked what he thought about the matter. He said he could understand Lady Churchill and had pity on her. Graham Sutherland is a very honest artist, who could only paint what he saw. At the time it was painted, Churchill was an old man, worried by the thought that he would have to end his political career soon. But Lady Churchill shouldn't have had the painting destroyed. It could have been stored away until after their deaths.

38、Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?
It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must negatively affect people. A person’s conception of himself or herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.
Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing.” Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one, “You’re just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.” It is clear that while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.
Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths.
Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let’s not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.

40、Jessie lived in the country, but one year she decided to visit the capital city to do some shopping and to see the sights. She stayed at a hotel near the central market. She had seldom been to the city before, and was very excited about what she would find. On the first morning of her visit, as she walked from the hotel to the market, she passed a beggar.
He was holding up a notice which said, “Blind from birth. Please give generously.”
Jessie felt sorry for the blind beggar and she bent down and put a dollar coin into his bowl.
“Thank you,” he said.
On the third day, however, Jessie did not have a dollar coin. She had only fifty cents, so she dropped this into the beggar's bowl.
“What have I done wrong?” the beggar said, “Why are you so stingy (吝啬) today?” Jessie was very surprised by what the beggar said.
“How do you know I haven't given you a dollar?” she said “If you are blind, you can't know what coin I put into your bowl.”
“Ah,” explained the beggar,“ the truth is I'm not blind. I'm just looking after this place for the regular beggar while he's on holiday.”
“On holiday!” Jessie exclaimed. “And what exactly does your blind friend do on holiday?”
“He goes into the country,” the man said, “and takes photographs. He's a very good photographer.”
