46、In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.
In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. A person, who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.

47、Mr Brown was very good at fixing things around the house when they broke. One day he went to another city to do some work there, and his wife was alone in the house. While Mr Brown was away, one of the faucets(自来水龙头) on the bathtub broke. Mrs Brown didn't know much about fixing broken faucets, so she telephoned a plumber(管子工).
The plumber came to the house that afternoon and fixed the faucet in a few minutes. When he finished, he gave Mrs Brown his bill for the work.
She looked at it for several seconds and then said, "Your prices are very high, aren't they? Do you know, the doctor costs less than this when he comes to the house?"
"Yes, I know," answered the plumber, "I know that very well, because I was a doctor until I was lucky enough to find this job a few months ago."

49、In November 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt and some of his friends went on a hunting trip to Mississippi. After hours of searching, Roosevelt and his group had not come across any wild animals. Finally, the group did track down and surrounded a helpless bear. One of the guides asked the president to shoot the bear so he could win a hunting trophy (奖励). The president raised his riffle first and then put down his gun, letting the poor bear go. News reporters throughout the country reported the story, spreading Roosevelt's kind act.
Not long after this report, a famous cartoonist named Clifford Benyman drew a cartoon based on Roosevelt's rescue of the bear. When a store owner in Brooklyn saw the cartoon, he decided to make toy bears to sell in his shop. He asked the president Roosevelt for permission to use the name. "Teddy's Bear" for his toys, as a reminder of the bear Roosevelt had set free.
Nowadays, everyone knows these toys as Teddy Bears, but few people know that they were named after President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt.

50、Now satellites are helping to forecast the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere, because this is where the weather forms. They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists(气象学家)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.
Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.
So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead.

51、Last summer, I took my first airplane flight from London to New York. I boarded the plane at Croydon Airfield and, from that moment on, my life was arranged for me on the trip. First, I was directed to my seat by the stewardess. Then, when the plane was ready to take off, the other passengers and I were told to fasten our seat belts. A few minutes after take-off, magazines and newspapers were passed out. Because my ears hurt, I was given some gum to chew. Next, we were given instructions on what to do in case of an emergency. We were given earphones to listen to music and told that a movie would be shown after dinner. Before dinner, we were asked if we wanted a cocktail. Dinner was served on a tray, but it was attractive and delicious. We were permitted to have a refill on any beverage. After dinner, we were shown a new Hollywood movie. When I felt cold, I was given a blanket and when I felt airsick, I was given a paper bag. Everything was done for the comfort of the passengers. When the plane landed, I was almost sorry to get off and have to start doing things for myself again.

55、Johnny lived with his mother and father in a small town in the mountains.
One day there was an earthquake near the town. Many houses were broken. Everyone thought that there would soon be another earthquake.
They were worried that the second earthquake would be worse than the first. "We must send Johnny to a safe place," Johnny's mother said to her husband. "Many of our friends are sending their children to relatives in other towns." "We'll send him to my brother, Peter," Johnny's father said. "He lives a long way away. Johnny will be safe with him."
He telephoned Johnny's uncle Peter and asked him if he would let Johnny live with him. "He is a good boy," he said. "He won't give you any trouble." "All right," Johnny's uncle Peter said. "But I'm not used to children. I live a very quiet and peaceful life." "You won't know Johnny's in the house," his father told him. So Johnny, who was eight, went to live with his uncle.
Two days later, his mother and father received a telegram from Peter. It said, "A returning child. Please send earthquake."
